About us
‘Advanced Rhythm’ and 'Applications of Karnatic Rhythm to Western Music' have been constantly developed and improved over the past 20 years. They were formerly known as 'Contemporary Music through Non-Western Techniques'. We are now five teaching over 200 students a year. Find out more about us below.
Jos Zwaanenburg
Jos Zwaanenburg is one of the most well known flute players in Europe, having developed new microtonal flutes and specialising in live electronics. He has been teaching this programme since 1999. He is also a conductor of contemporary music ensembles and coordinator of the Masters in Electronic Music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Read more about Jos |
David de Marez Oyens
David de Marez Oyens is the coordinator of ensembles in the jazz department at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, well know bass player in the Netherlands having played with most known musicians and has been teaching this programme since 2005. Read more about David |
Rafael Reina
Rafael Reina has been teaching at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam since 1993 where he developed the programme 'Comtemporary Music through Non-Western Techniques' from which 'Advanced Rhythm' and 'Applications of Karnatic Rhythm to Western Music' are derived. He has completed a PhD and published a book on the applications of Karnatic rhythm to Western music. Reina is also a composer of contemporary classical music. Kristina Fuchs
In addition to teaching Advanced Rhythm, Kristina Fuchs is also the main teacher for Jazz Voice at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (Artesis) Belgium. She has also taught Jazz Voice at a number of other educational institutes in Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. She is a well-known jazz-educated singer also performing mainly in the same countries where she teaches.

Jonas Bisquert
Jonás Bisquert teaches Advanced Rhythm for composers, classical performers and improvisors at the conservatories of Amsterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht. He also gives guest lectures, workshops and coaching for performers (orchestras and ensembles) elsewhere. Jonás composes for concert, opera, dance performance and on location. He leads the Band Without a Residence Permit and is programme developer for the Gaudeamus festival.
